THE UNKNOWN NOTES

BLUE = DJANGO,
GREEN = BRETT,
RED = CRAIG ,
OLIVE =STEVE
GENERAL NOTES
Mix is too bass heavy.
Not too much bass the instrument, but too much low and mid
frequencies in the mixes as they are. All drums have to be brought
up in the mix and especially the kick drum.
WHITE CHOCOLATE
needs more bassdrum, chunkier bass,
high-hat at 1:53 tweak?, toms
need volume
Needs new
vocals
Needs Backup Vocals on refrain
Clock Sounds Needed for beginning and end
Needs a more distinctive Bass solo from Steve (can barely hear
the one on
there now)
Bigger
distortion on a second guitar in refrain.
Maybe one or two other guitars with some other effects. Maybe
something like My Bloody Valentine?
It's hard to judge whether a new bass solo is needed. We should
be able to
get the one that is there brought out in the mix better? If not then
we should
rerecord.
Some distant echo-ey feedback at end while clocks are
playing?
First thing that may broaden and make the fidelity
gain more width is pan the guitars left and right
speaker...if an overdub is necessary than so be it. I
say this mainly because the guitar, especially when
Brett goes into the lower registers blend in and get
lost in the keyboard bass. The bass I'm playing is
muddy, emorphous and blurs out down in the bottom
sludge of the structure; and there if fits
wonderfully, but alone and without intrusion.
Melodically speaking, the guitar needs to make its
presence known and felt comfortably above this
emorphousnous. Brett has opportunity to do this both
in his distortion component and especially with the
non-distortion component. As a matter of fact, its
going to make or brake White Chocolate. I gave an
idea, but I want feedback from all 3 of you gentlemen
as to how we can produce this separation.
Drum-wise, obviously we have major issues with volume,
mix etc. all in my opinion easily remedied with the
talent of Hair Boy.
HOUSE
House - everything
needs more oomph, at 1:13 possible cut and paste for
timing?
X Needs to be a little fatter. Agree a couple of more instruments
may do it.
Strings on Steve's keyboards maybe?
X Second vocals would kick ass - especially ballsy almost
screaming layered in
X The band muffed coming back into the tune at 1:13.
Im happy with the vocals perhaps a second vocal in the
beginning and end
Maybe add another layer of instruments on the percussive
beginning and end?
Not too much tweaking needed here
ELIZABETH TAYLOR WITH WHITE
HAIR -
Best track, needs more bottom
end, thumpier bass drum, more guitar overall, flute takes are awesome
maybe a
little lower in the mix
X Tempo issues by me?
X Crisper guitar in the mix. Too muffled.
X Drums are pretty good in mix except kick.
X Backing vocals for the 1962, 1963 etc? Second guitar doubling in
same
section?
X Bring up keyboards a little in mix
X Bring the vocals down a little in mix
X Flute has to stay - very cool.
Guitar needs to come up a bit in the Mix
New Vocals needed
Background vocals during refrain needed, soft whispering on the
la las
I love the flute
Kill the drums for the first couple of measures, until the first
snare roll
kicks off the song
Great Drum fills
Keyboard Solo Needed
KAMAKAZE GIRL
- close to perfect, bass drum, drum sound is good
should
serve as a model for other tunes,
X If there are backing vocals in refrain, either pulled back or
some singing
oooh's or the such.
X Guitars up a little for refrain.
X Love this tune!!
I like the vocals maybe add background vocals to the refrain?
Maybe not?
Guitar needs to come up a bit in the mix during the refrain
Guitar, Keys, Drums and Flute are all great
TALIA
what can I say? bigger drums perhaps, more guitar I like the mix not much to change here
Might like to overdub Steve yelling out once or twice during the
song
Maybe sing along during one part.X Some other guitar and keyboard "noises" added tastefully to fill
a little.
X Otherwise think it's pretty awesome as is. Vocals rule, sax
rules.
X Don't think there should be other vocals added.
BELLY OF THE CRAB
- Awesome! our best tune! Only thing watch Craigs
key on
vocals with steves background vocals
X Keep the vocals that
exist right now but drop them deep in the mix so that
they are almost ethereal. Do a new vocal track that will be the main
one.
X A little more percussion? Bring down the hi hat in the mix a
little.
X Reverb on Steve's vocals to give it a more longing distant
quality
X Doubled guitar really is cool - gotta give Bill mad props for
that call. Also
for making me nail that ending.
Other than re-recording the vocals because my voice was shot, I
dont see much
in need of change on this track
Percussion is really cool, double guitars are great
Get rid of the drum clicking off the tempo at the very
beginning, and start
with guitar
I like the maracas
ARCHEOLOGIST
- Nice and moody, runs too long after poem
ends Me
thinks
X Craig this is a very haunting piece with your poem. Very cool!!!
X Add some echo to your voice
X If you rerecord your part though I like the quality of having
you near the
mike.
X End around 4:30. I like the way it ends at 6:30. Is there a way
to cut and
paste that?
Im too close to the mike and its catching all my s noises
too much;. Id
like to re-record the vocals standing a few feet away from the mike
Guitar is fantastic!! Is the instrumental part of the song too
long?
AEOLIAN HARP
- definitely bigger drums, think tribal, desert Island,
cannibals and stuff...how bout some jungle noises? edit flute parts,
I donΉt
think we should here it at all till melodic bit at 1:24 which is
real nice.X Drums need to be BIGGER Also a second drum track.
X This is a very big and dramatic song - flute takes away from
that as it is.
Maybe drop it mix / add effects to it so it's not obviously a flute?
The flute
is great at 1:23 - 1:50.
X More oh's at end - make it bigger.
X A different guitar sound that is more cutting. Maybe just bring
them up in
the mix like Craig said.
Some areas of the flute need to be dropped out
Guitar needs to be up in the mix
Maybe some echo on the drums to make them more dramatic and
thundering
Vocal overdubs needed for the end
Im considering a second vocal track over the top of the lyrics
(maybe some
aaaahs)
MOONS
- good take..bass drum has vanished! maybe we can overdub...
high-hat
with click a little too up front, needs more ambience overall, a
little
bottom end in the mix would help. perhaps we could overdub a new
bass line?
how bout an ambient keyboard surge to add ambience on guitar only
bits?
Distorted guitars need more oomph, Timing on ending way off, how
bout fading
drums and letting guitar end on itΉs own?
X More delay on clean guitar
X Like Django's tapping on the cymbals at the beginning.
X Guitar is very muddy sounding
X Steve needs to record that second keyboard that is layered in
while I am
playing the guitar run.
X Bigger distorted guitar
X I muff at 4:20
X A whispy ending
Steve you sound a little rushed on the bridge towards the end
of it are
you happy with your solo or do you wish to re-record?
Vocals suck, I will re-record them
Guitar Solo needed
The Kick Drum is WAAAAY too low in the mix ; in fact the kick
drum is down too
low in the mix for all the songs
MASTERSON THE BAT
- Love this one! needs more guitar and keys and
less horn,
thumpier, funkier bass drum sound would be good. Tom fills need some
punch
if possible, horn solo is wicked! love the ay it trails into final
chorus.
great ending!
X Hate the intro guitar. Need to redo.
X Sax needs to come down in mix. Overpowers everything else.
X Bring drums up. Great playing by Django
X More backing vocals. Good sax solo.
X Second guitar could work to layer.
The first time I heard the sax in the first two verses, I hated
it, but the
second time I heard it, I liked it, and its growing on me.
Nevertheless, I
think it needs to be down lower in the mix until the solo (it sounds
like a
bat!!).
Drums need to be up in the mix
Need background vocals on refrain
Vocals need to be re-recorded
Brett, are you happy with the beginning? Id like to hear you
take another
shot or two at the solo guitar intro
Does this need a second guitar overdub for layering?
Absolutely LOVE the keyboard solo its so weird!!!
MARILYN MONROE'S DIARY
- isolate fog sound to one instrument,
scarier noise
blast, last blast less horn.
X Definitely need echo
on keyboard and guitar. Double or even triple the
keyboard.
X Steve's scream rules.
X Sax actually could sound really cool bathed in echo too
maybe add some effect so the guitar/keyboard sounds to make them
deeper, more
resonant, and more threatening
maybe add some echo on the vocals
Django, do you want to add any creepy percussion?
LIVE MINNOWS
- Great Take! funkier snare sound, more tribal tom
sound, needs
bass line or something, bigger guitar sound
X Start with keyboard (drop Django counting off)
X Second guitar for texture.
X More background vocals.
X Wah or envelope on guitar in bridge
X Bigger drums
X Fatten keyboards
X Some sort of flub at 2:15
X Stick clicks on some fills.
X Flange all the tracks at end
Im largely happy with this track
Need lots of hand clapping and extra vocals on refrain
Theres a couple flubbed notes, but the vocals will cover them
PINK LEMONADE
- wild and wacky! sounds like sloppy sex, very good
take, real
piano sounds amazing! punchier drum sound would be good, crisper
cymbals.
Pink Lemonade - our Piano Man, an instant classic
X Sauc-eee is all I can say.
X Piano up in mix
X Steve add a bass line?
X Rerecord screams with Craig further away from the mike really
belting it out.
X Great ending
Piano needs to be up more in the mix, Sax down a bit
When I yell out, Id like it down in the mix a bit
X THE UNKNOWN
- MUCH bigger guitars, strange background distortion
at ;46?
cool solo, drumz need volume, more bass drum, snare and everything.
Maybe a
re-take is necessary, I donΉt know.
X Sirens
X More and bigger guitar (too muddy) Can't hear the end of the
guitar line
X Not sure if I like the guitar solo. Maybe keep it as a secondary
solo and
take another crack.
Vocals need to be overdubbed
Guitar needs to be layered with an additional track
Sirens and Spoken word intro needed
Sirens at the end
The beginning of the song (the first measure) is sluggish is
there a way to
fix this via overdub?
Archeologist Revisited
X A hidden track
