For years, Cobalt possessed the "Invulnerability Factor" which altered the laws of physics to protect him from any kind of life-threatening harm. Since founding the House of Orange, Cobalt's powers have decreased, and he is now naturally vulnerable to any mortal danger. 

 

COMMENTS:

Born in the back of a Taxi Cab in Hot City, Cobalt was raised by his Aunt Beatrice and Aunt Cecilia.  His entire extended family are either alchemists or fringe scientists, as such, he was raised in an environment where he was surrounded by paranormal science and reality was constantly in flux. Cobalt's young life was spent falling through temporal nexus points into alternate universes where he fought in the "Stuffed Animal Wars".

Realizing that Cobalt was himself a living temporal nexus point, Beatrice and Cecilia sent him away every summer to stay with his Uncle Prospero, who cast a series of culminative spells to render Cobalt impervious to harm. As Cobalt entered his teens, his Aunts placed him in a Pocket Universe, where he assumed the identity of Michael Brogan and formed a teen detective squad called the Brogan Brothers.

Once the "Brogan" pocket universe became unstable, Cobalt was relocated to another possible reality at Woodlake High School where he assumed the identity of Wayne Russell. During both of these periods, Cobalt continued to slip into alternate universes via temporal nexus points located in closets and abandoned buildings.

In an attempt to stabilize the various realities that were vying for existence. a group known as the Nocturnal Knights recruited Cobalt to be a student at the Mulder Time Institute (MTI) located in Hot City. Enrolling to study Temporal Art, he joined several people he had met through his trans-dimensional travels and formed a band called the Tombstone Teeth. 

Over a 4 year period, The Tombstone Teeth released seven albums and toured time and space. In the meantime, the percussion/sax player for the Teeth, Doc Tombstone, was performing radical alchemical time experiments in the MTI laboratories. Cobalt participated in several of these experiments, including the first successful attempt to send a human backwards through time using an alchemical solution known as Time Emulsion.

 

After graduation, Doc Tombstone decided to sequester all the Time Emulsion he had ever formulated.  He formed a group called the Anachronists to guard against misuse of the Emulsion. Cobalt joined this group, making the Anachronist Headquarters (Central Justice) his home for nearly a decade as he traveled and worked as an artist and musician.

 

At the end of the twentieth century, a being known as the "REDMAN" decided that Time Travel/Time Emulsion was too dangerous for mortals to control, and set about absorbing it all. He retroactively was able to re-write reality as it was known at that time. Part of the REDMAN's judgment was to disband the Anachronists; he sent Cobalt and his friend Bus DDTMilklithin 300 years into the future, where they joined the Flat Astronauts. After three years of adventuring with the Astronauts, Cobalt ended an intergalactic war when met and married "V" the princess of the Honeybun galaxy. V and Cobalt shacked up in a house that sits on top of a nexus point and formed the House of Orange.
